Yacht Charter Cost

Memo: What's included in the yacht charter expenses.
Often, travelers are taken aback when they receive a yacht rental quote, as they expect that it would be all-inclusive. However, this is not quite the case. Selecting a leisure yacht with the best price-performance ratio is the subject of a different article, while this one will summarize the main expenses for a week-long charter and the possibilities to save.
Mandatory expenses
— Yacht/catamaran rental. The price is directly dependent on the season, year of production, dimensions, and technical equipment. The early bird and last call booking may help you save up to 40-50%.

— Transit log is a document permitting sea passage. Also, charter companies add the cost of final cleanup and comfort package to this price. It varies from 170 to 400 euro depending on the yacht.

— Tourist taxes. On average, those are 1,35-1,40 euro per tourist per day.

— Returnable deposit is an insurance from the damage inflicted at the hands of the guests. It is held on the bank account for 7 days and is fully refunded in the case no damage has been discovered. I will talk about it separately. Price-wise, you should expect from 1,500 to 4,000 euro depending on the yacht. An important detail: if a hired captain works on board, he bears responsibility for the yacht's technical condition with his insurance.

— Water & fuel.
Even if you plan to spend the entire week under the unfurled sails, a small supply of fuel might be helpful for entering and exiting marinas. You should refill the fuel tanks to the original level upon return. The price for water starts from 100 kunas, i.e. approximately 13 euro.
Extra expenses
— Captain's services. You can invite your friend with a yachting license, which would help economize. As for the experienced licensed captain, his services should be paid for. The price depends on the yacht dimensions and charter company's tariffs, or personal arrangement – from 120 to 200 euro a day + food.

— Hostess' or chef's services. A sea vacation runs smoother when there is some help on board to cook the food, clean the cabins, look after the children, book a restaurant, etc. Should you wish to have a restaurant-level menu 3 times a day, a chef would be your best bet. A hostess' daily fee is 100-200 euro per day, while a chef requires 150-200 euro + food.

— Anchorage in marinas. If the route and weather permit, you may enter marinas only to refill water tanks while spending the nights being anchored in a beautiful bay. However, if the weather is not favorable and a strong storm is imminent, stopping at a protected marina is strongly recommended. The cost varies from place to place, depending on high/low season, as well as the yacht's dimensions. You should expect 70-120 euro a day.

— Food supplies. Should you so wish, you may cook on board where you will find a small well-equipped galley, or else you can eat out at restaurants. This will determine your budget. In case there are hired crew on board, their basic catering is your responsibility – nothing fancy, just keeping them well fed.

— Sports and fishing equipment. The most popular equipment is SUP boards (from 90 euro / week), kayaks (from 150 euro / week), fishing rods (from 50 euro / week), snorkeling masks and fins (from 10 euro / week). By the way, many charter companies include various entertainment options, such as snorkeling masks, SUP boards and outboard engines for a lifeboat, so check the Entertainment section in the yacht description beforehand. This section also contains information about acoustic systems, radio, and LED-TV on board.

— Lifeline netting on the railings. It is especially relevant if there are small children and pets on board. It is not really required for adults. The cost varies between 50 and 130 euro per week.

— Pets on board. Tourists who cannot or would not leave their dog or cat at home, more often than not will be able to take their pet along on a yacht. You will need to have an agreement with the charter company and pay for the service in the amount of 150-200 euro per week.

— Tipping the crew. Just like at restaurants, the common courtesy is to leave a small gratuity for the crew, apart from their fee. The amount is totally up to you. There is an unspoken rule to leave 10% or more from the fee.
