Weather on the Adriatic

Tips on Croatia's climate and planning a yacht route according to weather.
Any yachting tour is almost always fraught with a risk of route adjustment due to weather. While travelers plan their vacation weeks and months in advance, the more or less precise forecast is available only three or fewer days before travel.

Spring

In March, the blossoming period begins and the air gets filled with smells of rosemary, daffodils and magnolias and in April, all Croatia is bright with colour. The rainy season comes to an end and almost all the days are sunny. In April the temperature rises to +17 °C, and up to +20-23 °C in May. You can meet more and more yachtsmen talking about the coming season on a cafe terrasse in the marina.

Spring yachting is filled with freshness and warmth, the sense of unity with nature and silence. You can see dolphins swimming nearby, deer and sheep walking in semi-transparent spring woods. Although few people will dare to have a swim until May, the weather on the Adriatic in spring is especially good for a sea trip.

Summer

The weather in summer is a balance of dry summer air with the average temperature up to +26 °C, of the fresh sea (of approximately +21 °C) and warm breezes. Other months in spite of the heat are also quite comfortable for your holiday. In July, the water temperature reaches +25 °C and you can swim and snorkel for a long time. Even in the hottest summer month of August, the air is not too dry thanks to constantly blowing light winds.

In July and especially in August, it is a high yachting season which is not surprising as it is much easier to withstand the summer heat on the sea. There is nothing more enjoyable than relaxing on the deck under the light blowing of the sea breeze.

Autumn

September in Croatia is only called the autumn month as the air temperature is +25 °C in the daytime and it doesn't get lower than +20 °C at night. In Dalmatia, you can easily swim until the very end of the month - the water is warm, up to +23-25 °C. September is perfect for travelers who prefer a more tranquil holiday, without crowds of tourists.

In October, it is still warm enough. In the daytime, the average air temperature is +21 °C but you can already feel the breath of autumn. However, thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate, even in November there are a lot of sunny days which are good for a sea trip and a mountain hike.

Winter

This time of the year, especially December and January, usually bring days with frequent pouring rains and cold winds. The air temperature in January varies from +1 to +7 °С; in February on sunny days, it rises up to +10-12 °С. It snows in the mountains and Croatians spend their free time on the ski slopes or go on holiday to Slovenia, Italy and France.

On the sea, you will only meet some seagulls and occasional yachts. You won't meet even sailors as in February there is a ban on fishing.
How to plan a weather-adjusted route
Seasoned captains who have sailed the length and breadth of the Adriatic recommend planning as follows:
  • 1
    Choose a sailing region
Before choosing a yacht for a sea cruise, travelers should narrow down the departure location and key destinations they would like to explore during the voyage. Also, one should decide whether the purpose of the travel is going to be visiting cities and cultural sites, a relaxed getaway, or a mix of both.
  • 2
"Test the waters" with the help of locals
Experienced captains, especially local ones, are well familiar with specifics of a given region and are able to come up with 2-3 options for various weather and wind scenarios, as well as customer whims and preferences. However, if you are going to set out on an independent voyage, make sure you "test the waters" and find out what weather conditions to anticipate by, say, checking the weather for the same date range of recent years.
  • 3
    Get a weather heads-up
Before each voyage, the captain checks the forecast and finalizes the route accordingly. When meeting the customer, the captain discusses the plan of actions and adjusts it during the week. Local captains normally use the YR.no website and the Windy app.
  • 4
    Have a fallback plan
If poor weather conditions or strong winds are expected, the captain may offer to drastically alter the route. For first-time voyagers, high waves or winds may ruin their enjoyment.
